2021

So there's really no reason to make excuses any more. Obviously I'm not good at keeping up with this. But a ton has happened since my last post so I'm going to document some of that here.

  • You're in 5th grade now. Still at EP Rayzor, getting ready for 6th grade at Harpool. It's crazy looking at you picking out electives and thinking about how quickly you seem to age.
  • You're a 2nd degree black belt now. On your journey here, you only 'no changed' one time and that was due to a struggle with the board breaking. It's extremely common to no change and I do think it taught you to prepare more so you could walk in confident to each testing since then. I'm not sure you'll continue after this school year when your membership runs out, so I hope you get as much as you can out of it between now and then.
  • You've changed your mind a few times on what you want to be when you grow up. Right now, I don't think you know what that is. But you've gone from fashion designer to interior designer to author to YouTube star. You actually started a YouTube channel that has almost 5k subscribers, which is just crazy! Most of them came from a Real Life singing battle that you posted with some of your friends before Covid (more on that later). You've been a bit inconsistent with it for awhile now, but we got you some equipment for Christmas (ring light, microphone), so I hope you get back to it.
  • We also have another idea for a YouTube channel, I want you to start Rykwondo. It's an idea that I had a couple of years ago and I really wish you'd done it back then when you were smaller. You're almost as tall as me now (just past my chin), so the novelty is about to wear off. But basically the idea was to have you teach celebrities how to use the taekwondo weapons you've learned. I thought it would be funny to have a tiny blonde girl teaching people how to use bo staffs and swords. And the celebrity aspect would get you tons of viewers. Da knows people in the world of anime, so we could probably get your first "student" pretty easily. It's a good idea, so of course you don't want to do it. ;)
  • We've been on a couple of cool vacations since I last wrote. The first one was to Guanacaste, Costa Rica, which we went to with our friends The Krauses (Paula, Reuben and Ryder). You and Ryder are a year apart (he's older), but you got along SO WELL. I don't think you had a single argument then entire week we were there. We stayed at a resort that had the best food. We also went on the coolest excursion I think I've ever been on. We did ziplining, went down a water slide that was cut into the mountain, horseback riding, eating local/authentic food and drank some coffee that grew on beans steps from where we drank it, hiked to a waterfall, caked ourselves in volcanic mud and then baked in the sun, sat in a natural sauna (built into a cave) and then hung out in a series of hot springs. It was definitely one of the best days of my life (minus the horse that tried to kill me). The beaches were dark sand, which were really cool to look at, but awfully hot on our feet, so we spent more time at the pool than the beach.
  • The following year, we ended up going to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic by ourselves. We ran into a lady and her two sons in line at the airport and chatted with them while we were stuck in the slow line. They ended up on our plane and then our same resort! They were pretty cool, she was Italian and even had an Italian passport. One of her sons was a year younger than you and one was a teenager, so all three of us kind of had someone to hang out with since Da is basically a teenage boy on vacation. :D There had been reports leading up to our trip of people dying in DR, so we didn't do any excursions, but we probably could have. Seemed like it was just a bunch of media garbage and we had a lovely time and never once felt like we were in danger.
  • Which brings me to last year. Holy shitake mushrooms girl, we were not prepared for 2020. The year began fine, I had started a new job in October at a place that I loved (Advito). I got to go to London for a leadership meeting, which was awesome. I didn't see much of London because we were so busy, but I loved being part of the leadership team. Then right after, we started hearing about Covid. I don't really need to tell you what that was, it ended up being a pandemic that shut down the world for a year and counting. I got furloughed from my job in March and haven't been called back yet. I did a contract and wrote a book in my time off. You did school from home for the last few months of 4th and the first 9 weeks of 5th. You hated 4th grade, so that wasn't a huge loss, but it's been quite the bummer having this happen your 5th grade year. You were supposed to go to sleep away camp, which you looked forward to since you heard about it in Kinder. They aren't having your last Daddy-Daughter Dance. It sucks, but we try to focus on just staying healthy. It's been hard, quarantine was no ones favorite. By the way, Da is back at FUNimation full time, which incidentally works out for you since you've decided you like anime.
  • Some good things that came out of 2020: we all spent more time together, I got my black belt and we finally got rid of that piece of human garbage Trump. First he incited an insurrection at the Capitol, which his dimwitted followers claimed weren't actually his people. But now I'm off track and you can Google this if you want to hear about what an absolute clown house his presidency was. I did love writing my book. I'm really hoping to get to go back to Advito at this point. If not, we're probably going to sell all our crap and move to Spain. Which does not please you, but Da and I are really liking the idea. Even though Biden is president, we're still surrounded by Trump-loving ding dongs and that's not really how I want you to grow up.
There is so much more I'm sure I'm forgetting, but hopefully those are the highlights. Here are a few of your faves:

  • BTS
  • Ruhi Patel and Kaitlynn Anderson are your besties
  • You spend all your free time playing Roblox and AdoptMe
  • You're starting to find a new style, which is either giant sweatshirts or cute tops with black pants
  • If I let you, you'd eat Nutella for all of your meals, but you're also still a mostly adventurous eater. Unless you can have Cane's, then you just want fried chicken.
I guess that's it for now, I'll write more when something actually happens again or when I think of other things I forgot. I'm actually supposed to get my first Covid vaccine tomorrow. I'm high risk because of my asthma, so I get it before Da. And you aren't old enough for the vaccines they have approved. I'm hoping it won't be a problem that we're on such different schedules. I suspect we'll be needing this vaccine regularly going forward. We shall see.

Anyway, I laboo!
Ma
